Everyone has their list of “what if” guys. What if the timing had been different, what if he hadn’t just broken up with whoever, what if I weren’t about to travel somewhere or worse, what if I hadn’t been so afraid, what if I hadn’t been so blind, what if I had known then what I know now? What if we had ignored the fear and everything else and had given “us” a chance. What if?
In the last week I have randomly run into three of my biggest what ifs. To them I would like to dedicate the TOP 3 WHAT IF SONGS. The first two came to me quite easily but the third… oh the third was a tough one. At first I thought I would select “Famous Blue Raincoat” (Leonard Cohen) but, although sad as a what if, it’s more for a friend than a lover. Then I considered “Last time I saw Richard” (Joni Mitchell) but it’s more about the death of the dream of love so I passed. Finally I settled on “Ghost” (Indigo Girls) which is a bit different in the what if approach but in essence it’s the same. What if…
Guys, these are for you:
- Martha (Tom Waits)
- Yellow Coat (Joan Baez)
- Ghost (Indigo Girls)
I had said your ‘what ifs’ many of times. I had said them and yet did not feel like I became any wiser or more enlightened.
Then I decided it was time to change my ‘what ifs’ to: what if I gave myself a break? What if I stopped obsessing? What if I replaced some of my nostalgia or reminiscing to becoming more of a realist? What if things were what they were because they just were? What if I started trusting my judgement and not beat myself over the head if I made a mistake? Let’s face it! It is easier said than done, yet not impossible.
